One of the main reasons for starting this
site was the fact that so many people that had visited Gibraltar
said that they could not find a decent information site that
actually gave them an insight into life here before they
arrived. It was with this in mind that this site came into
being. It was not conceived as being flash, mega dramatic or
anything like that, it was designed to be a simple to use
colourful site, one of our clients descibed it as "A little bit
Rustic", if that's what it is then we have achieved our
objective, simple and down to earth!
This highly visual site is intended to
give potential visitors to the Rock an advance view into life on
the Rock and to promote tourism and an interest into the Rock
itself.
Hopefully any visitors will look at this
site and realise that the Rock is not just a duty free paradise
but steeped in history. Every turn you make can lead to a past
part of life on the Rock; sieges, military actions, naval
confrontations, each alley way can lead to a plaque or a
memorial to those who not only risked, but quite often gave
their lives to ensure the freedom of the people.
It is not a place to give away too
lightly, it is a place to cherish. Remember the Battle of
Trafalgar a true turning point in world history, remember the
two World Wars, remember the more recent world conflicts and
then you can see what this Rock actually means to todays modern
world.
Look at the new developments, look at the
investment in the local infrastructure and you will see why this
place called Gibraltar is so important to this modern world and
its history - visit Gibraltar, do not just look at its surface
picture, look beneath it all, investigate it and make sure you
enjoy your visit. Check out this site, check out the photographs
and if it helps - then this site has been worth the work.

An Introduction to Gibraltar
The history of Gibraltar is rich and
varied, its name is derived from Gibel Tariq (Tariq's Mountain),
named after Tariq Ibn Zeyed who was the leader of the force of
Arabs and Berbers who conquered Spain in 711 AD. However
it was not until about 1000 years later when the Treaty of
Utrecht was signed, bringing the War of the Spanish Succession
to an end, that Gibraltar ceded to the British. The
interpretation of the British is that basically Gibraltar was
given to them indefinately, the Spanish view is somewhat
different! This conflict of views has always been a thorn in the
side to Anglo Spanish relations, irrespective of the Spanish
maintaining the enclaves of Ceuta and Melilla in Morocco, and eventually led to
the closing of the border by the dictator General Franco in
1968.
With the death of Franco in 1975 and the
return of democracy to Spain relations with Britain have
certainly improved, except in one area - Gibraltar! The border
was actually re-opened in 1985, essentially a "siege" of 16
years, but still the topic of Gibraltar is brought up at every
opportunity by the Spanish Authorities. In November 2002 the
Government led by the Chief Minister, Peter Caruana, held a very public referendum to
assess the popular mood (as if it wasn't known already!) The resounding
result and the huge majority returned ensured that it is
practically impossible for any British Government (even the
current one!) to hand Gibraltar back to Spain against the wishes
of the inhabitants. The trouble is, in this dispute, there is no
room for manouvre, Spain will never give up its claim on
Gibraltar and Gibraltar will never ever concede to being
controlled by Spain! So why not just give up on the whole
argument, the whole thing is a pointless exercise!!!
By the way, one thing to remember is that Gibraltar is
British and therefore the currency is Sterling, so make sure you
are not told to take euros, you get much better value for your
money in good old British Pounds.
