X Straits Games 2007 – Gibraltar

Over the last weekend athletes from Spain, Morocco and Gibraltar met in Gibraltar to celebrate and compete in the “X Straits Games 2007”. A total of 25 different sports were represented in one day at varied locations around the Rock from Athletics to Volleyball in a sporting feast that did Gibraltar proud in hosting. To cope with the amount of competitors in so many events in such a short time showed how really organised the authorities were. To sort out the schedule of sports, the accommodation for the athletes and the catering for all and sundry was really a mammoth task and the fact that everything went off without too many glitches is a testament to all those involved in what was an incredibly wonderful days sport.

It was one of those events in the sporting calendar where no outright winners were declared, no gold, silver or bronze medals won, every participant was presented with their own medal, but it showed how much the sports have progressed within the region, Gibraltar can hold its head up with our achievements, La Linea, Los Barrios, Tangier and Melilla can be proud of their boys and girls. A truly outstanding display of the talent of all of our young sportsmen and women whether it be in football, handball, gymnastics, swimming, fishing, sailing or whatever, it really was a weekend that everyone can be proud of:-
